| Tacoma to Host Teen Masters Bowling Event |
For millions of Americans bowling is simply a great way to have fun with friends and family. But for a rapidly growing segment of the population, bowling is serious business. High school bowling is the fastest growing varsity sport in America and many NCAA universities offer talented female bowlers full-ride scholarships.
Tacoma finds itself right in the heart of the action on June 12th and 13th when high school and junior high athletes from across the region get down to the business of qualifying for the richest scholarship event in youth bowling, the 14th annual Teen Masters Bowling Championships! Pacific Lanes, located at 7015 South D Street in Tacoma, has been selected as one of only 40 locations nationwide where aspiring youth bowlers can earn an invitation to the Championship Finals at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno this August, where over $100,000 in college scholarships are expected to be awarded in singles and co-ed team competition!
"We are very excited that Tacoma has been chosen as the host city for a 2010 Teen Masters regional qualifying event," said Jon Graef of the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Commission. "Pacific Lanes is a great venue for prestigious bowling competitions and the Tacoma area is a great family destination!” The Teen Masters regional qualifying event in at Pacific Lanes is presented by the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Commission and the Tacoma Athletic Commission. The Tacoma event will feature singles and team qualifying competitions, each which will advance bowlers to the Teen Masters National Championships in Reno. On Saturday, April June 12, the singles event begins at 1 pm with participants bowling six games in one of six divisions: Boys Under 14; Girls Under 14; High School Boys, High School Girls, Collegiate Men and Collegiate Women. Singles competition continues on Sunday morning at 9 am with an additional six games. Based on twelve-game totals, the top two boys and top two girls in each division will earn automatic invitations to compete for national titles regardless of the number of entries. Additional invitations will be issued based on the total number of entries. Regional scholarship we be awarded on a 1:4 ratio.
At 1 pm on Sunday, the new Teen Masters team event provides the opportunity for co-ed teams to earn additional scholarship awards and bragging rights as the best high school bowling team in the nation!
Without question, the Teen Masters is one of the premier high school championship events in the USA, and many of the top players from previous events have advanced to the top levels of the sport. Michael Fagan, the Teen Masters’ very first champion, recently became a Profession Bowlers Association champion. Diandra Asbaty, who finished 2nd in 1998, has been recognized as the top female bowler in the world. Sean Rash, whose best finish was 3rd in 2002, found collegiate and PBA success. And many others have gone on to bowl collegiately and represent the United States in international competition as part of Team USA. In 2009, Federal Way student Catherine Rawsthorne, finished 3rd in the prestigious event, competing on national television!
Since its inception in 1997, the Teen Masters has helped prepare aspiring athletes for collegiate, international and professional competition by featuring a challenging scoring environment. The 2010 edition will continue the tradition of conducting its events on challenging lane conditions to offer a genuine test of skill to all contestants. “Bring your spare game” is the mantra of those who have stepped up to the Teen Masters challenge.
The 2010 Teen Masters regional qualifying event at Pacific Lanes is presented by the Tacoma Pierce County Sports Commission and the Tacoma Athletic Commission. National sponsors include Dexter, Ebonite and the Kegel Training Center. For complete rules, eligibility guidelines, and entry information, please visit: www.TeenMastersBowling.com. # # #
